Spelling has been found to be both Finton and Fenton.  Recent information kindly shared by Jeff Long, longj1@juno.com (January 2005) gives Delilah's obituary,  marriage and census records from Stark and Tuscawaras Counties.  Jeff is a descendant of John Finton and Delilah Parker, thorough their daughter Alice Elizabeth Finton and James Pickens and from my analysis, made the Finton line clearer and more documented.  Thanks to Jeff for sharing his research.

Generation 1

William Fenton Sr married a Mary Ann MacMullin. William Finton Sr. settled in Tuscawaras County, Ohio between 1816 and the 1820 census.  He is not listed on 1808-1809 or 1816 tax lists, but is on 1820 Census.  William Finton Sr. and a probable son from census ages are listed.  Out ancestor William Fenton Jr. appears listed in Stark County, Oh..  Stark is directly north of Tuscawaras,  Stark and Tuscawaras were divided about 1830, with parts of Harrison County to form Carrol County, Oh.  On the 1820 Census William Finton Sr. is listed as 45 + years.  William Finton Jr. is listed as 26-45.  In the 1830 Census of Ohio, Tuscawaras County, we find William Finton Sr. is listed as 60-70 years old.  William Finton Jr. who has probably moved from Stark to Tuscawaras county, age30-40.  A James age 30-40, who was on 1820 as well, listed then as 26-45, which means he was born 1790-1794.  A Reuben age 20-30 and a John age 30-40.  On 1820 Census, William Finton Sr. has one daughter age 16-25.  On 1830 there are two younger females and one older female(90-100), besides his wife (50-60).  There is a William Finton listed on 1800 and 1810 Washington County, Pa. census, probable ours.  Washington County, Pa. was a consistent supplier of residents for the newly opened state of Ohio.

So a  projected family of William Finton Sr. and wife, possibly one Mary Ann MacMullin (According to unverified LDS file) would be:

The marriage records of Tuscawaras and Stark Counties give the following Finton marriages

Tuscarawas County OH Marriages 1808-1844

James Finton            Sarah Wolfe                             28 Apr 1818
John Finton              Elizabeth Woolf                         26 Aug 1814
Reuben Finton          Mary Harbaugh                        17 Aug 1828
Reuben Fenton         Catherine Bash                         04 May 1843

Early Marriages of Stark County OH  1809-1840

William Finton        Roseanna McCreery                 22 May 1817
Elizabeth Finton      Cyrus Wingate                          17 July 1823

It is possible, but difficult to verify without looking at land transactions, that even though different counties, these families may have lived next door to each other, but simply across the county line.  This would be even more difficult to trace with county changes listed above.

William Finton Sr. appears to move to Logan County, Ohio before1840 census, again land records would be helpful.  Living in Stokes Township with sons James and John and probable grandson William R Finton.  William Sr. is now listed as age 70-80, along with his wife, and again an older female 100 years plus.  This has to be his or her mother.  William Finton Sr. appears to die between 1840 and 1850.  His wife Mary is listed as living with son Reuben, she is 82 years old (b. 1768).  James Finton son of William Sr. is also listed in Stokes Twp. Logan Co..
Our ancestor William Finton Jr. is found in Clermont Co. Ohio, Batavia Township.  I believe this has to be him, because if you take 1830 Census numbers and project the ages 10 years, there is a perfect match between ages, males and females.  Also there is documented in Tuscawaras County History, the movement of William Fenton Jr.s' wife's family to Cincinnati, Oh. or Hamilton Co. which is adjacent to Clermont.  See Copy of History on McCreery Family Page.

Generation 2

William Finton Jr.
John Finton's death certificate lists his father as William Finton. On the1880 Vigo County, Indiana census he lists his father's birthplace as Ohio, his mother's as unknown, and his as Ohio.

Non-verified LDS File located on 1/6/2004 states:  William Finton was father of John Edgar Finton and his mother was Rosanna McCreery.
1830 Tuscawaras Co. Oh. census has the following for William Finton:  0100101-00102.  Male 10-15, male 16-25, and one over 45.  Female one 16-25 and 2 females over 45.  Male 10-15 is proper age for John Finton. (birth date: 12/29/1818 Tuscawaras Co. Ohio.)  The file states that William was born 1793, Perry, Pennsylvania and died 1840.  Rosanna was the daughter of  James and Mary Ann McCreery.  See Stark Co. marriage record above.

Children: (probably born in Tuscawaras Co. Ohio)
