.The following material is from the Horn Papers.  The Librarian at Harrisburg said they doubted the accuracy of some of the statements in the Horn Papers, primarily because they have never been able to find the source materials.  On pg 548, it is stated that David Irons was born in Md. in 1729.  He had a son James Irons born in 1767 who came to Green Co. Pa. in 1769.  He was one of Dr. Dodd’s Paddle Students.  He married Katherin McNeely.  Their children were John, James, and Jane.  John became editor and Proprietor of the Waynesburg Messenger in earlier years.

Misc. Md. Records Lester Irons Notes:

Thomas and  Williams, History of Allegany Co. Md.. Of the 35 early families living in Cumberland, one was Thomas Beall.  Mr. Beall at once began preparatin of a town and in 1785, formally laid it out and called it Washington Town.  A number of lots were sold.  When Thomas Beall of Samuel first laid out the town, he sold lots on a rather customary basis.  The deed which we have whereby he sold a lot to Jonathan Irons is in accordance with what is set forth in the record.

In Brown’s Misc. Writings found in the Hall of Records, it is stated that in 1804 there was a general  assessment of the property  in Allegany County.  There are among the archives of Allegany Co. a ponderous book, 7 inches thick, weighing 35 pounds, showing who were the taxpayers. The county was at that time divided into six election districts and 8 assessment districts.  The territory now constituting Garrett Co. was known as “Sandy Creek Glades Hundred” and contained 126 taxpayers.  John Irons was one of those listed.

Among the DAR records of Allegany Co., there is a reference to a will of  John Irons dated 11/2/1850, at page 22.  It is there stated that John Irons was a farmer who left his property to wife Mary, to son John, and to children William, Rebecca Lee, Margaret Michael, Catherine Wheeler, Sarah Lee, Mary White, Nancy Harvey, Joseph Charles, Henry, and Phillip.  John Irons was the Executor.

In the will of Jonathan H Wilson dated 3/13/1843, In Allegany Co. Md. Mary Irons is shown as an heir.
The final account in the estate of Thomas Irons is recorded at page 232 in the estate records of Allegany Co., showing that the final report was filed on June 13,1849.  The distributees were James, Thomas, and Patrick: the administrator was George C Perry.

The DAR summary of land records for Allegany Co. Md. states that Allegany Co. Courthouse burned 1/5/1893,  and with it earlier tax records.  There was a tax levy for 1804.  At page 42, John Irons is assessed for 130 acres known as Pretty Springs located in District #1.  Sandy Creek and Glades Hundred.

In the DAR summary of marriage records for Allegany Co. Md. from 1791 to 1847, it is shown that Mary Irons was married to James McGurie on 1/12/1843.  Rebecca Irons was married to John Lee on 7/11/1818.  John Irons married to Mary Dixon on 3/16/1842.  Joseph Irons was married to Elizabeth S. Harvey on 6/10/1845.  Patrick Irons was married to Louisa Zimmerlar on 11/10/1836.

The Baltimore Directory for the year 1796 shows no persons by the name Irons.

The marriage records for Frederick Co. Md. from 1778 to 1837 shows the marriage of Charles Irons to Elizabeth Sheely on 9/27/1813.  Joseph Irons married Mary Lane on 4/10/1810. and Michael Irons was married to Rebecca Jackson on 1/20/1820.

The Hall of Records, Annapolis, reference is found to the will of John Irons in Vol. B, pg. 22.  There is also shown a land patent to John Irons on 12/20/1804 of Pretty Spring containing 130 acres.  This is recorded in Vol. IC #P, page 594.

According to church records appearing at the Hall Of Records,  Sarah Irons m. Thomas Poole in 1735.  This appears in the St. Luke’s Church record for  Queen Anne’s Co..  John Irons was married to Hanna (?) in 1767.  Ref. Accts. Liber 56.  Fol. 155.

Hall of  Records, Annapolis, an assessment was made in 1783 of all property in Md..

There was an assessment against Charles Irons of Kent County, District 4 of forest land and a house and lot.  There was as assessment in Washington Co, Cumberland, against Edward Irons, and one against John Irons, one against Rebecca Irons, and one against William Irons.  There were also assessments against Simon Irons , a single man, inKent Co.  District 5, and against Rachel Irons of Harford Co. of a rather large estate known as “Gunpowder”.

None of the Irons living in Cumberland, Washington Co. in 1783, owned any land.  These were William, John, Edward, and Rebecca Irons.  Presumably all of them were adults.  William Irons apparently owned one slave.  All of them owned certain horses and cows but overall the assessments were rather small.

Military Records, Hall of Records;  Joseph Irons of Frederick Co. was appointed to the Militia on 5/9/1808.  According to Military Pay Accounts, John Irons, a Private, received from John Hamilton, Agent for Maryland, for all sums owed by the United States for military service, in the total amount of $283.30.  The receipt was signed by John Irons and was showing that he was discharged on 10/22/1783.

In 1778, John Irons took the oath of fidelity in Hanford, Co. Md..  According to the book by Newman on Maryland revenue records, a federal bounty land rent of 100 acres was issued to John Irons on 3/1/1791.  The patent was based on Warrant No. 11407.  I am told this warrant can be obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C.  (I have a copy WMI)

The following appears in minutes on revolutionary soldiers from the State of Md. found in the Hall of Records.   From the list of Minute Company for Kent Co. under command of William Henry, who marched from said county 1/29/1776, now stationed at Northhampton Co. Va. ,  it appears that Charles Irons was a sargeant in the group.

From the muster of Md. troops, beginning with the Muster Roles for January, 1778, First Regiment, it appears that John Irons (or Iams), Private, enlisted 6/3/1779, in Rawlings Regiment.  The original date of the enlistment is not shown but he re-enlisted as a Private on 8/24/1776.  He was hospitalized during June and July 1777.  His name appears in the list of officers and soldiers, 8th Company of Md. Line in service from August 1,1780 to January 1,1781.  He was in the 7th Company under Captain Samuel McPherson at time of discharge.

History of Beaver Co. Pa. pg 854,  it is stated that Joseph Irons, a farmer, Post Office Woodlawn, was b. 5/8/1818, on the old Irons’ homestead where his father, Solomon Irons settled in 1808.  The latter, the son of James Irons and a native of Ireland, came to this country at the age of 15 (1785) and  family settled in Allegany Co. where he married Rachel, daughter of George Dixon, one of the pioneers of Allegany Co.. She died in June 1828, age 47.  She had 7 sons and 5 daughters.

James and Peter Irons are listed as serving in the War of 1812-14 from Allegany Co. Md, with Blairs Company as privates.

Genealogical and Biographical History of Keokuk Iowa:pg. 510   John Irons

Ninety-two years of life filled with useful effort and crowded with respect and esteem of his fellow-citizens have left this venerable resident of Keokuk Co. still hale and hearty and with every prospect of continued health for some years to come.  He was one  of the pioneers of this locality and is today and honored citizen of Adams twp..  A native of Md., he was born in Allegany Co., on the19th of April 1810, and is of German descent,  his father John Irons, having come to America with his parents when but 6 months old.  The family located in Frederick Co. Md, about 45 miles from Baltimore and the father of our subject was reared to manhood and married, the lady of his choice being Catherine Hann, who was born and reared in N.J..  The young couple located upon land in Allegany Co. and there in the midst of the forest the father cleared and improved a farm.  Throughout life he engaged in agriculural pursuits.  During the early days the family endured many hardships and privations, the country being still in its primitive condition.  The mother died when about 58  yrs of age and the father passed away at the age of 78.  In the family of this worthy couple were fifteen children, twelve of whom reached manhood and womanhood.  There were six sons and six daughters, but only four are now living, one being a resident of Nebraska, another of Kansas, and the third in Virginia,  while our subject make his home in Iowa.

On the home farm John Irons passed the days of his boyhood and youth and on reaching man’s estate he was married in W Va. in 1832 to Margaret Powell, who was born in MOnongalia Co., near the Marion Co. line.  Fourteen children blessed this union.etcetec etc.   After this marriage Mr. Irons located in Mumm Co. W.Va. where he engaged in farming for 14 yrs and continued to make that place his home for 2 yrs longer when he returned to the old homestead in Allegany Co. Md. having purchased the same. He continued until 1853 when he sold the place and came to Iowa.  etc  etc  etc

****Analysis:  Article written about 1902.  From Md. census and marriage records,  the John Irons who married Catherine Ham in 1767 would have to be his grandfather, not father.  His father John Irons by analysis was born 1757-1762, with marriage record being 1767.  So John Irons(Keokuk Iowa b. 4/19/1810), John Irons(b.1757-1762 Md. census, will, and son of John Irons emigrant and Catherine Hamm.)
